While MFA provides a crucial layer of protection for your account, there might be occasions when you need to deactivate it. Before proceeding, it's essential to understand the various scenarios and their implications.
Cautionary Note: Before disabling MFA, consider the security implications. MFA is a vital tool against unauthorized access. Turning it off might leave your account more susceptible to potential breaches.
Situation A: Voluntary Disabling of MFA
If you've decided that MFA is no longer needed:
-
Consider Bypassing on Trusted Devices: Instead of entirely disabling MFA, you might want to mute the MFA prompts on a specific device. This means you won't input the code every time you log in from that device, but MFA remains active on other devices, requiring a code input once every 30 days for verification.
-
Steps to Disable MFA:
- Navigate to your profile icon on the header bar and click to reveal the dropdown menu.
- Click on 'Multi-Factor Authentication'.
- A dialog will appear with details about MFA. After going through it, click on 'Disable MFA'.
- Authenticate yourself by entering your account password.
Re-enabling MFA: Should you reconsider, you can always re-activate MFA for added security in the future. Regularly revisiting your security settings helps ensure the best protection for your account.
*Situation B: Account Lockout (Requires Admin Assistance)
If you're locked out due to unforeseen reasons, another Admin user can help disable MFA for you:
Important Note: The assisting Admin must have MFA active on their account to undertake this task. Once MFA is disabled, for security reasons, the affected user will be logged out of all sessions.
- On the left-hand menu bar, go to 'Settings', then 'Users'.
- Pick the user in question from the list.
- Locate 'Options' at the top left and click on it.
- Click 'Disable MFA'.
- A dialog will appear; review its content, then click 'Disable Multi-Factor Authentication'.
Regular Audits: For Admins: Regularly auditing and reviewing which users have MFA enabled, especially for those with elevated permissions, is a sound security practice. A proactive security approach is paramount for safeguarding your organization's data.
